Though Ali grew up in a sailing family, it wasn’t until the economy began its downward spiral that she gave more thought to the water again. “When The Secret came out, it was talking about visualizing what you want your life to look like. I tore the cover off of a travel catalog and put it on my refrigerator. The magnet that held it up said ‘Dwell in Possibility.’” And on her 35th birthday Ali woke up and refused to leave her bed until she had come up with a plan.

You think you’ve been a Spoleto supporter for a while? You’ve got nothing on Rhys. “I came to Charleston in 1983 and was in the right place at the right time.” Now in his 29th Spoleto season, the director of production now counts Spoleto as a client of his company, Technical Theater Solutions.

A year and a half ago, Chassity put creativity to keyboard and started her blog Look Linger Love, a colorful creampuff of fashion, interiors and art. “Blogging keeps me engaged in the topics that I love. I share an average of eight posts a week and that doesn’t come without time and research, but when the topics are fashion, interiors, and the like, it’s hardly homework.” Readers will often spot locals like Sally King Benedict or goodies like Hannah Nation’s Gadabout, but she swears it’s not bias—“I cover a lot of Charleston talent, but only because Charleston is brimming with it!

When Jennifer started making note of local restaurants that offered deals on kid-size meals, friends kept asking for more. Fast forward to now and Out to Eat With Kids is its own nationally recognized website with a mobile app to boot. “Creating a reliable, on-the-go resource for parents that makes life easier—I knew it had potential but never thought I’d be the one behind it.”

You may not yet know the woman behind Little Highrise, but you certainly know her work. The marketing and advertising firm does everything from a one-time logo to full-blown websites. Keep your eyes peeled for an interior designer’s upcoming brand overhaul and ecommerce projects for Charleston’s Revolutionary Eating Ventures group— plus Eat Local Month has Little Highrise flavor all over it too. “Every project that I work on is personal.

Let’s face it — if you’ve spent time walking or eating your way around Charleston, you’ve seen David’s work. From Hominy Grill’s Rutledge Avenue grits gal to Taco Boy’s patio installation of Our Lady of Guadalupe, David’s brushstrokes set the scene. “It was at Hominy Grill that I first experienced the nature of painting in the public eye. Hundreds of eyes drove by, often with an encouraging yell or honk.

Although Glazed Gourmet Doughnuts, their King Street doughnut bakery, is only in its infancy, the shop has been getting rave reviews and leaving Mark and Allison to keep up with demand. Locals love their inventive flavors like The Purple Goat and Maple Bacon, but you can’t go wrong with a well-loved glazed.

It started almost four years ago, when Brooks got his first road bike as a gift so he could get around the Holy City during college. What ended up being a useful gift also awakened something in Brooks. “The bike was made to take on long rides and I decided to give it a shot and rode it for 20 miles, then 50 on my next ride. I got pretty hooked.” A late bloomer as far as competitive cycling is concerned, Brooks has only pushed harder to make up for lost time.

Dick and Nancy met in 1951 while he was working abroad and she happened to be visiting a friend in Venezuela. It was love at first sight for Dick, who asked Nancy to marry him two weeks later. Nancy said no, and then changed her mind in the morning. Through multiple countries, they’ve had kids, grandkids and plenty of adventure.

Dick: “My father told me two things: First, always tip your hat to a lady and second, marry a girl that’s fun. I said that girl is gonna be mine.”

New Orleans transplants Donna and Rena are both mainstays in Charleston’s creative arts scenes. Donna, a visual artist, has recently delved into storytelling by quilt, while Rena’s warm-weather vintagey venture, Happy Camper Snoballs, has locals longing for sweet summer nights.

Rena: “Sharing a sense of adventure and sharing a passion for art and learning are some of the many things that keep us together.”

For Josef, it was a recurring case of procrastination that jumpstarted the idea of Visualive. As a Sony Music marketing rep, he was responsible for papering the Holy City with flyers and posters as well as online promotions for upcoming concerts and music releases. “I loved the online part, because it allowed me to literally wait until the last minute. If I waited until the last minute to distribute posters, I wouldn’t be able to get it all done.

In 1989, Meredith (on the right) was signing up for a summer camp at USC when she got the first inkling of a duplicate doppelganger. “One of the counselors that was registering the students thought that I was another Meredith English that she knew. She told me how funny it was that we were both blonde and blue-eyed!” Years later, the other Meredith (left) was having spam issues at the College of Charleston, where she is a marketing director, when an email popped up with the subject line Hello from Meredith English.

The problem with Stacy and Sallie is that they usually run in very different circles. Stacy, the owner of Hampden Clothing, a King Street boutique consistently recognized by Vogue, and Sallie, the chief operating officer of a business and taxation law firm, are often mistaken for the other. “Last Christmas I was shopping in Grady Ervin and one of the guys asked why I wasn’t talking,” says Sallie. “They seriously thought Stacy was playing a joke on them.

It’s not unusual for young girls to have wild adulation for pop hunks, and Barbara did… it’s just that she didn’t know who he was at the time. In 1956 young Bobbi spent a pre-rock-royalty day with Elvis Presley, who happened to be shadowed by a photographer at the time.

The first name that comes to mind on the topic of Citadel-ceiling-shattering might be Shannon Faulkner; but hers was only its first tiny crack. It was Nancy, the third woman to enroll at the Citadel, who was the first to graduate from its hallowed halls. Following the footsteps of her father, a decorated Citadel grad himself, was never the original plan, but she jumped in with both feet and a buzz cut when the option arose.

A longtime sailor and lover of all things educational, both interests have come together for Teddy. Already an economics teacher at Charleston Collegiate, he’s had his fair share of engaging students, but teamed up with the South Carolina Maritime Foundation Teddy’s got a grander goal: “a hard core campaign to get South Carolina’s youth to see new and larger horizons and more importantly to graduate from high school.” Already known for their ongoing leadership training and experiential learning aboard the Spirit of South Carolina, Teddy knows that SCMF’s positive persistence pays off.

Carol had just turned 19 and was home from her first year of college when news of the 1969 Stockade Riot at Fort Dix compelled her to act. Already running in anti-Vietnam War circles, she considered this her final straw. “Now I had proof that the guys were being shockingly abused in addition to being used as cannon fodder.” So in the summer nights she made five roundtrips to the Canadian border, dropping young anonymous soldiers off and then getting her odometer turned back by handy mechanics.
