True confessions: * Not as politically aware as I should be. * I bite my nails. * I didn't love the Sex and the City movie. * I am actually, really addicted to sugar and should probably be in a 12-step program. * By addicted, I mean, I lash out at people and get grumpy when I haven't had my sug...

Closet Conundrum

Monday, August, 4, 2008

Have you ever opened your closet and just thought, “...Ugh.”? I do, on a regular basis. Because of this, I have 4 black skirts, 8 black dresses and innumerable white button-down shirts in different sleeve lengths and styles (puffed sleeves, three-quarter length sleeves, tie-neck, flutter sleeved, embroidered, oxford).

I recently watched this video at Domino magazine’s website, where one of their columnists gets a wardrobe do-over from aesthetic consultants White-Starr.

What I learned, is that I settle a lot in shopping. I love white shirts because they are generally flattering, crisp and clean looking, and there are so many styles available. However, since I have never found the “perfect” shirt, I just keep buying and buying until I do.

What these consultants do, is bring you out of your sartorial comfort zones and introduce you to shapes and fabrics you might not be familiar with, but that may be far more flattering for you.

Also, they seem to emulate the French style of shopping--quality, not quantity. Why would you stuff your closet 16 white blouses when you only need 2? Why own 22 pairs of jeans when there are only 3 pairs that you regularly rotate?

I need someone like this to tear apart my wardrobe while rebuilding a classic look that flatters and ignores the many (fleeting) trends.

Has anyone done something like this, or have you done your own cold, calculating closet makeover? What pieces would you put in your “wardrobe essentials” pile? Is there an article of clothing that’s changed your life?

On the topic of closets and wardrobes, I’ll leave you with a photo of my wardrobe, which I painted about a month ago:

i have realized (oh so sadly) that pretty much every piece of clothing i buy at marshall's or tj maxx is evidence of me impulse buying and settling. i don't even look at the clothes there anymore, instead i pick up cheap exercise stuff (i know you are ashamed to have a friend with an $8 yoga mat, but still...) and home wares - $20 600 thread count sheets? never a regret.

I bought my first yoga mat at Marshall's! Along with a stability ball. Good stuff.

I'm stuffing stuff in bags even as you blog. I've been living in my spare bedroom while doing some work on my house. When I moved out of my bedroom, I left most of my junk in the closet, which has been sealed shut to protect it from construction dust. I've barely missed any of those clothes...so I think it's time for most of them to go.

It's funny...whenever I go through stuff, I think "I cannot POSSIBLY give this away." Yet, when something is misplaced, only to be found months later, you realize you never even missed it.
