Jack Alterman takes photography to new heights.

To be honest, this is probably not Jack Alterman’s first time in a skirt. “My parents and grandparents were in the ladies’ apparel business, so I’m sure this happened at some point in my childhood.” Photography started as a way of escaping the family business and the drudgery of school: “I found myself wandering and imagining things.” Jack’s childhood hobby has proven quite successful; working commercially paid the bills, and his career’s success has allowed him to focus on more artistic ventures. “A Few Familiar Faces,” Jack’s portrait project, sprang from a photo shoot with Philip Simmons in 2000. “As I was taking his picture, I realized that he had a great face. It reminded me of why I love portraiture.” What started with one picture has now grown to around 150 portraits of Charlestonians. Jack’s other photographic love is architecture—he recently collaborated on a book, Cornices of Charleston. Don’t be surprised to see him high in his cherry-picker, capturing an angle of Charleston that only he can see, but, when developed, everyone can admire.
