Dear (Food) Diary,

Monday, May, 5, 2008

I recently realized that I have no clue of how many calories I take in daily, so I started a food diary this morning, and boy has it opened my eyes. My boss, Kelly, who is diabetic has explained to me multple times the importance of looking at carbs, sugars, and fiber content, as well as calories. All of that knowledge has gone out the window, so for now I am just looking at basic calories. The yogurt, which I thought was a healthy snack, actually has 30 calories more than a snack-sized bag of Nacho Cheese Doritos. Whaaat? These things seriously throw me off. I also have no clue how people manage to figure out these things. This morning I had cereal (brand-name drop: Crispex) and after I poured the cereal in the bowl, I looked at the handy-dandy nutrition info: “Serving size: 1 cup. Calories: 110.” Well...how many cups were in my bowl? I poured all of the cereal into another bowl and ladled it back into the original bowl with a half-cup(total: 1.5). Then I poured the milk. Only after I did so, did I think, How much milk (at 110 calories per 1 cup) did I use? I can’t strain the cereal out to measure the amount of liquid in the bowl!

For those of you who have the mental and emotional strength to measure everything before you eat it, how do you do it? I’d be reduced to all ready-made portions so I didn’t have to calculate 1 tb. butter, 1 slice bread, 1 half banana, etc.

After half a day of this, I am completely exhausted. I will go back to not knowing how many calories I’ve consumed, because, honestly, it’s too much work. I’m just trying my best to eat a lot of green things, and only a little bit of things that are artificially-neon. That’s all I can do.

This calorie thing used to freak me out too, but actually, now I really love calorie counting. It's a strange phenomenon, since I do not embrace charts or graphs or other forms of organization, but the thing in me that loves lists loves writing down everything I eat and counting it up. It's weird, it's slightly scary, but it makes me happy. Anyway, Sabrina, I think eating lots of green foods is the way forward. As long as by "green things" you don't mean the shamrock marshmallows in a bowl of Lucky Charms.

of what you're putting into your body every day, but you don't have to obsess! Even die-hard Weight Watchers use their scales for about a month and then they can use their eyeballs after that. I simplify my eating plan by not buying products with: enriched or bleached flour, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), or saturated/trans fats. And instead of focusing on carbs, I go by "net carbs" and keep that under 30 grams every meal (net carbs are total carb grams less grams of fiber per serving...the more fiber, the lower the net). And because I get overwhelmed at the grocery store, I always have a list of "OK foods" with me when I am shopping.
