dude reading skirt

Monday, May, 5, 2008

i am a camera phone-aholic. i have an obsession with taking pictures of people who are unaware that they are involved in my ongoing anthropologic art experiment. on my personal blog, i post pictures of people wearing double denim (an unforgivable sin, in my opinion), but today i’d like to share something a little more special than the texas tuxedo:

a dude reading skirt!

i snagged this spectacular shot at one of my favorite lunch spots, the charleston tea company (turkey and brie, add tomatoes). they always have a stack of skirt!s and a couple on the coffee table for you to browse while you wait for your sammich. i couldn’t tell whether this guy and his wife were tourists or not (the shop is literally across the street from the visitor’s center), but i thought it was sweet that he picked it up, and literally couldn’t even wait to sit down before he did some serious browsing. later they both sat on the couch with their own copies, flipping at different speeds.

once i’ve even been in there, sitting on that same couch, while the woman next to me was reading the magazine. i watched her carefully as she decided which essays to read, which ads made her stop and look, and what witty pages she might decide to take the time to read completely. had i helped write those pages? did i proof that copy? what if she didn’t like our jokes?i have to say, i’m glad she didn’t look over at me and say “woo, those skirt! gals must be a little nutty, don’t ya think?!” (even though we are...)

sometimes when i’m leaving whole foods and pass by the skirt! rack, i say louder than usual: “skirt!? i love that magazine!” ...and i secretly hope someone taps me on the shoulder one day and says “me too!”

I love hearing new ways people describe jean-on-jean...I grew up hearing "Canadian Tuxedo"...I like Texas Tuxedo, too! And I love how you said "sammich" :)
