We woke up bright and early to get our press passes and immediately went to a press conference hosted by Eve Ensler, Rosario Dawson, Kerry Washington and others. They made us so excited about all of the things we were about to experience and all of the people who were about to enrich our minds with their informative panels.
We were moved by slam poets and singers and inspired by activists. It was so overwhelming to be in the same room as the founder of CODE PINK, who I’ve read about on so many occasions. It was also amazing to me that Jane Fonda would just show up and listen in on the panels. She was the only other celebrity besides Eve herself who would be around, listening, on multiple occasions.
We saw Alyson Hoag, of Authentic Beauty, working her magic on a gorgeous Gulf Coast woman in the beauty lounge, and we ran into Kris Carr taking a break from making cucumber/watermelon/mint smoothies in the wellness lounge. Both these ladies are so powerful and strong and willing to give all they have to help others.
Donna Karan was an almost interview, but our video camera died just as it was about to begin.
The panels ended with an “ecstatic dance session” which was absolutely awesome. Everyone started out kind of self-concious, but by the end, were all having a blast.
The cap of the evening was an incredible performance called Swimming Upstream, a moving series of monologues and songs depicting members of the NOLA community and their thoughts before and after Hurricane Katrina. Some of the cast members included Shirley Knight, Kerry Washington, and Anna Deavere Smith, among other talented women. WOW!
