charleston fashion week

Monday, March, 31, 2008

this past weekend – thanks to our glorious and very generous boss, nikki ‘the bomb’ hardin – i found myself a member of the who’s who social club of charleston. yes, sabrina and i attended a fashion show AND the finale gala at charleston fashion week

friday night, sabrina and i attended the emerging local designers fashion show, where 6 designers were picked to show their lines for the cfw crowds. and frankly, it was a little bit weird. it was fashion showy enough that there were lots of sullen and hungry models stomping like baby racehorses down the runway. but it was also emerging designery in the sense that the lines shown often made me think “huh-what?”

foster fox, apparent darling of ayoka/charleston/everyone, presented his line, introducing it as “baccarat chic.” it ended up being screen prints of ayoka lucas’ face (hello, shameless) paired with some sort of random equestrian prop theme... including english riding helmets (like the models’ heads didn’t look big enough already) and riding crops used with various s&m allusions. he got a standing ovation from the crowd, but you should know i was already standing. i was dumbfounded. sabrina was confused. nikki left. i shrugged.

but i’ve got to say, it improved from there. my friend laura snagged pictures of two of my favorites:

krista beth huff’s opening piece, a magenta backless jacket sort of thing that had a huge bow on the back. her whole show was bright and brilliant, i really loved it!

a red petal dress by carol hannah whitfield... a bit fuzzy, but i found that erica over at the city paper had a better shot (and was also similarly miffed by the ayoka screen printing). carol hannah whitfield’s show was ridiculously amazing and she really deserved the standing ovation you see in the background.

by saturday night, we were pumped for the gala! sabrina and i each brought a pal, thanks again to nikki. you may remember me mentioning my name-twin friend margaret, well she was my oh-so-thrilled date for the night.

we had an absolute blast, they played enough 80s tunes to keep everyone happy, and had enough of a cheese selection that i had a lovely little dinner of manchego and chardonnay. i did some mini-mingling in my dance floor corner and made friends with a super hilarious photographer whose name now escapes me (maybe i never knew it?) – but he’d better be sending us our mocktastic photo spread.

i also ran into a younger acquaintance from high school, who it turned out had modeled in foster’s show the night before. this model – let’s call him bob – drunkenly informed me that he hated gay people. a very informative meeting, yes... isn’t it so lovely to run into old friends? i took his champagne away and told him he probably wasn’t going to make it in the business with that attitude.

our fantastic night was only marred by the messy and crowded bathroom (be glad i didn’t take a photo). overall, i had a spectacular time and can’t wait for next year! see you there!
