True confessions: * Not as politically aware as I should be. * I bite my nails. * I didn't love the Sex and the City movie. * I am actually, really addicted to sugar and should probably be in a 12-step program. * By addicted, I mean, I lash out at people and get grumpy when I haven't had my sug...

The Day After the Zombies

Wednesday, March, 5, 2008

You may already have read Margaret’s tale of last night’s shenanigans (Charleston City Paper’s Best of 2008 Zombie-themed Party) and seen the photos (why do I look so gleefully terrified?) but I figured I’d add my own 2-cents.

I, unlike Margaret, did not eat dinner before the event, so poor Margie was dragged from table to table while I sampled (read: stuffed my face with) delicious foods from Charleston’s best eateries. With handfuls of sushi (thanks, Wasabi), crabcakes (mmm...Boathouse), mini-burgers (Chai!), and a rich, chewy brownie from Saffron Bakery under my belt (literally...after all that food, my belt is a teeny bit tight this morning!) we stepped back and watched the zombie antics.

Some people took the zombie outfits to another dimension. There were prep school zombies, zombies with walkers, cage-dancer zombies (with nip-slips included)...there were even Bonnie & Clyde zombie hunters there! Some people got very “into character.” One guy (er...zombie guy?) asked Margaret and me how long we’ve been undead. My response: “Um...10 minutes?”

The highlight of my evening was Cabaret Kiki’s performance.

If you are from the Charleston area and are unfamiliar with this 1890s cabaret- meets 1920s vaudeville- meets 1980s punk musical theatrical experience...shame. on. you! For someone who loves vintage clothing and would love to time travel to other eras, this experience is right up my alley. If you want to experience the wonder that is Cabaret Kiki, they’ll be performing at Theatre 99 May 14-17.

While enjoying CK’s performance, I met Katie, a self-named “avid skirt! reader.” What a cool gal (I’m stealing the phrase of Abby, our Sales Director, here)! P1050864.JPG

Thanks, Katie, for the great conversations! Smart, politically aware (and well-dressed, with great taste in music, to boot!) she is exactly what I think skirt! is and I’m glad she reads our magazine. If anyone else sees Margaret or myself out and about, stop and say hello! That kind of thing means the world to us. Plus, we love hearing about why you love skirt! and what you’d like to see that you haven’t seen yet, and we’ll try our best to make it happen.

Thanks again to Charleston City Paper for throwing this awesome bash. Hopefully we’ll be attending a lot more!
