Janice Fetter is going for the gold

“I’ve always been competitive. If I’m just walking down the street I try to be the one in front,” admits Janice, who now focuses her drive on Dragon Boat racing. The 2000-year-old Chinese sport was introduced to Charleston four years ago as a support program for breast cancer survivors, and “the minute I saw it, I knew I had to do it.” After initially “bumming a ride,” Janice (who is not a cancer survivor) now paddles with Charleston Surge. After months of training, she has earned a hard-won spot on the 21-person U.S. Women’s Grand Masters Team headed to the World Dragon Boat Championships this September in Sydney, Australia. “I’m an adrenaline junkie; these races require you to give everything you’ve got,” says Janice, who loves the camaraderie as well as the physical and mental challenge of the sport. “I wish the world was like a dragon boat team,” she says. “Everyone working together, in harmony, everyone giving 200 percent.”
